Is anyone else watching this?
Aug. 15th, 2011 11:58 pmThere's a show on Hulu from the UK called "MisFits".
It's a sort of a take on the "Heroes" trope.
A group of young offenders doing their community service encounter an "origin" and develop super powers. Wackiness ensues.
But here's the real hook for me: Each of their super powers has something to do with their own deep insecurities or fears. So it's a bit like discovering that you've been gifted with a power, but the power SUCKS. Big time.
This is not a power appearing on the show, but it is how I've been explaining this: Imagine that you have an innate fear of rats. Rats have always creeped you out, you find them disgusting, and were traumatized as a child when someone forced you to watch Willard. You wake up one day with the power to compel, control, and attract rats. Sometimes you wake up covered in them. They follow you and try to climb on you while you're going about your business. Mostly you spend all your energy trying to make them go away and seem normal.
This is some of the concept they're playing with. Having seen the first few episodes of season 2, I'm getting the sense that it isn't so much that the powers are sucky powers, it's that those fears, insecurities, and inhibitions are interfering with their ability to manifest these powers correctly. Each character is going to have to grow, change, mature, and frankly, Evolve before they are going to be able to really be super heroes.
And they keep killing their probation officers. I feel like a bad person for actually being amused by that. Heh. Snerk.
Oh, and there's a guy who has that obnoxious Irish accent (not the pretty Irish accent, the obnoxious one) who has a completely blown "filter". This has nothing to do with being struck by power-enhancing lightning. No, he's just a guy who will literally say ANYTHING and often does.
It's like being in the car with A CERTAIN PERSON when she's having a blood sugar crash and someone on the road is driving like an idiot. Sigh. I miss my pretty pretty princess. I need to learn new swears.
