Let's hope "13" means "Lucky"...
Jan. 3rd, 2013 12:13 pmThis year is getting off to a rough start.
My holiday pay wasn't what I was expecting. Another cow orker somehow managed to take an extra week of vacation, *and* got full pay for the holiday. (Grrrrr.)
Next paycheck should be better since I worked the week including New Year's Day which gets me a slight hourly bonus. I also got a quarter raise (whoo) which took effect on the 1st.
However, things are going to be super-lean for a while now. I'm off to visit with a client, then I'm working tonight (teaching, actually.)
And I managed to burn myself internally, which is making eating very... odd. I had made some sweet delicious creamy chicken rice in the rice cooker, and was hungry enough to eat the first bite before it had cooled. The outside of the glob of rice was just cool enough to eat. However, the nuclear center burned all the way down. I can feel it still. Not much I can do about it, but it is turing into a week of power-smoothies. I took advantage of the soup sale at Schnucks and got some soups, too.
I have to be super-picky about my soups of course. Even the "Low Fat" and "Low Salt" soups pretending to be healthy are still loaded with MSG. The ones who say "NO MSG*" on the label also admit that there is 'naturally occurring' MSG in the Yeast Extract. Psst: Want to boost the protein in your soups, manufacturers? Try adding a bit more MEAT instead! Want them to taste good? Add actual seasonings!
The good news is that I was able to find a couple of soups that were both on sale and with minimal amounts of MSG. I'll give them a try. One of them is clam chowder which is a very special treat for me. It is my reigning favorite soup of all time. Perhaps I will make some later in the season. My S.O.'s recipe is just the one in the Joy of Cooking.
