Stuck in my thumb, pulled out a plum...
May. 1st, 2005 09:50 pmWent and saw Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy tonight.
Here's my (relatively) spoiler-free review. My review takes for granted that you have some passing familiarity with the original stories, or possibly the BBC show. If you are completely unfamiliar with the stories, *AND* wish to see the movie completely fresh, you are shit out of luck and deserve to crawl back into your hole under a rock.
Have you ever experienced something that was completely inaccurate, but at the same time completely true?
That's what this was like.
It felt like Mr. Adams' work. The characters were new interpretations, but good ones.
Ford is not really the Ford I pictured, particularly since he was not "ginger haired", but his *character* was dead-on.
Zaphod is... well. I think he's reasonably well cast. The only other living person who could do him justice is Eddie Izzard. (Who was playing Sir Not Appearing In This Film. They should correct that.)
Trillian was more... Ordinary than I would have liked, except that she does tend to be the one who keeps things grounded in reality.
Marvin. Oh. My. Ghod. Pintsize in a role that will slay you.
Of course, Arthur Dent appears to be played by "some random british fellow." This, of course, is perfect. And he's great, really. He really did remind me of the one person on earth who (in my mind) is the quintessential Arthur. Yay!
Once I got used to the new ideas, (after I was "thwacked" in the head with mysterious shovel things from underground), I found myself leaning into it. This was fun.
I can hardly wait for the next one. If they have any sense at all, they'll keep giving us one of these each year until we run out of either material or money. Or, until the Vogons come to blow up the planet. You understand.
Look for cameos. They're in there and they're fun.
