Pacific Rim was pretty nifty!
I was able to just barely catch it at the Mills tonight with the kids.

Wednesday and today I spent taking The Girl to the mall during the day, then meeting The Boy for dinner/movie (or in the case of today, Movie/Dinner) time. The Girl was just delighted to see anything that wasn't playing in Farmington. Understandable; I double-checked and it looks like her hometown theater plays utter crap. Poor dear.

I also discovered that she loves horror movies now, and expressed a wish to see The Conjuring. I might have to see if it is still playing for her birthday and whisk her away to enjoy it.

So I saw Aliens vs Robots, or Voltron Vs. Godzilla.

During the opening exposition, it was explained that the big mechs required more than one pilot.

Duh. Some of us remember that it takes five pilots to manage the big robot. Why did they think they could even get it done with two?

On the other hand, consider how different Voltron would have been if all five pilots were required to "drift" together, as in this story?
Am I the only one who thought that it would be five kinds of awesome?

*scurries off to write some fanfiction*

Here's the thing: I liked this better than Avatar, though to be fair I didn't really love Avatar. I didn't hate it either, though it took a second showing to convince me of that. (Seeing it in 3D in front to one side was absolutely awful.) It just seemed trite and predictable.

Pacific Rim didn't have any huge surprises for me, either, but I loved the tech. I loved the monsters. I loved the carnage. (BIG bowl of popcorn and a BIG bucket O' Soda for this one.) I loved the characters, I really did. I could have used more character development, but it wasn't a trilogy. :D I just wanted more from the Russian Brother/Sister team. They deserved their own movie, as did the Asian brothers.

And yes, I liked the Dysfunctional Science Bros, Owen and the little guy. To be honest, this is what two differently brilliant people are like when pushed and put under pressure.

So yeah. I love Guillermo del Toro so very much. I love his work and I'll apparently follow him anywhere. Go G! Go!
